In Greece you’ll find islands big and small, arid and verdant, mountainous and flat. And although one can find many hidden retreats around the Aegean, few can offer the spectacular location, ideal orientation and convenient distance from the capital that this private island retreat in northern Cyclades has. Situated near the island of Evia, this tiny little islet was bought some 100 years ago by the current owner’s family, who then built a charming, neoclassical mansion right on the beach. Be prepared to be swept away by the many surprises and unparalleled hospitality this unique retreat has in store for you.
Able to house up to 20 people, the mansion has been renovated recently to meet the high standards of contemporary comfortable living; high ceilings and generous openings give the rooms an air of olden charm and elegance, and terraces all around the building offer ample space for relaxing and socialising al fresco. Guests will be impressed by the unspoiled landscape all around, which includes tiny, uninhabited islets and distant mountains across the sea. Spanning an area of 900 acres, the island is inhabited only by the two owners, who live in a cottage some 200 meters from the mansion, ensuring complete privacy and seclusion for guests throughout their stay.
With the sea at their doorstep and many other beaches all around the island, it will be hard to keep away from the crystal clear waters while staying here. Watersports equipment and bicycles are available for guests who feel active and want to explore the island a bit more: make sure you discover all the different beaches, or have a picnic basket prepared for you with snacks and drinks for a carefree day by the sea. Maria, the owner and hostess, is also a farming enthusiast who grows her own organic produce right on the island, which means you can expect the freshest and most tasteful vegetables and fruits in your plate. Guests can opt to cook for themselves, or to have a chef be in charge of the kitchen for an even more relaxed and hassle-free stay.
While on the island, there are many activities to fill your day with, from sports and fitness sessions to short visits to nearby islands and towns by boat. With Athens lying just an hour away by boat (30 minutes by speedboat), you can also head into the city and visit one of the many museums and galleries, or simply for a night out at the opera and fine dining. The much more cosmopolitan islands of Santorini and Mykonos are also nearby, easily reachable by boat or helicopter — but other Cycladic gems like Kea, Andros and Tinos offer an understated alternative to their more famous siblings. During the low season, guests can still enjoy the mild weather and see the seasons change out in nature, or join the olive harvest celebrations in October, when the owners collect the olives and have them pressed for olive oil at a nearby traditional press.
With its mild microclimate, unique landscape and the owners’ exceptional hospitality, this private island retreat will show you the most serene and authentic side of the Greek island experience.
