PETITh opens its hardware store – La Quincaillerie
Indispensable, useful, never futile, tools echo the dexterity of the craftsman, a founding value for Hermès
Indispensable, useful, never futile, tools echo the dexterity of the craftsman, a founding value for Hermès. Essential and therefore precious, these commonplace yet out-of-place objects have been designed to last, to gain a patina,to embrace the effects of the passing of time, and to be passed on from hand to hand. Screwdrivers, hammers, brushes and corkscrews... they are all coming to petit h.

If a saddler enters a cellar, it is to bring a touch of leather to the vintner’s vitals: leather apron, wine case opener and corkscrew; all prerequisites for levering, uncorking, aerating, testing, tasting... and enjoying. Image Alex Profit

On 21st January 2018, petit h, Hermès’ laboratory for (re) creation, founded in 2010 under the artistic direction of Pascale Mussard, opens La Quincaillerie, its quirky Hardware collection. Staged in collaboration with designers Stefania Di Petrillo and Godefroy de Virieu, an array of utilitarian novelties will cover the shelves of the Hermès store at 17, rue de Sèvres, Paris. Hammering, drilling, mending, repairing, attaching, hooking, organising, hanging, and maintaining... an abundance of ingenious objects for every purpose.

Brushing, cleaning, polishing, shining... shoes can never get enough of it. And before you walk away, be sure to do up your laces, those silken ties, and keep an eye on the eyelets as you go. Image Polis Ioannou

Sew, mend, stitch, topstitch, patch and darn... to give clothing a second life. These home repairs require precision. No patchy patches. No unseemly seams. And we are gripped by the clothes peg that holds up, holds down, holds in place, attaches and appends. Image Polis Ioannou

Give it a Try

From the screwdriver to tape measure, the clothes peg to the apron, not to mention the hook, the nail and the compass, the petit h Hardware Store stocks up and takes on essential, durable, timeless tools to facilitate and enchant the everyday. Handymen will be surprised, coat hook connoisseurs will be inspired, and even the DIY-shy will want to give it a try.

The hammer and screwdriver double-act have got a handle on things. Now sheathed in leather, these tools handle nails, studs, screws and rivets with ease. They are also designed and made to last, to endure and to be passed from hand to hand. Beauty in use. Outillage - Eugenia Sierko -Rouchon (c) Hermes 2017

Hammer out the details

For petit h, La Quincaillerie is also an opportunity to highlight the importance of gesture, of legacy and of the tools, that are an extension of the craftsman’s hand and mind. They are the sense and the very essence of Hermès. For without the nail and the round knife, there would be no saddle. Without a stitching clam and needle, there would be no bag. As for the hammer, even when it becomes a thing of beauty, it can also be used to hammer out the details. Objects are turned and turned about, turned over to new tasks to become essential accessories. Leather, silk, metal, porcelain, crystal... elementary materials, primary simplicity equals tools extraordinary.

Repair is recreation

La Quincaillerie breaks open a new universe for petit h to explore. A universe designed for creating tools to repair, patch up, and maintain everyday objects. Storage stools that close like a Kelly bag, bags on legs, multi- purpose trestles in Provence bamboo, glass coat hooks, trays with an umbrella handle, wicker minaudière bags, leather adhesive tapes... everything is self-evident and elegant. This inventory of tools will grow over time. Torches, candlesticks, blankets with sleeves, measuring cups, fly swatters, chopping boards, door-stops, magnets, and gardening gloves will all soon join the hardware collection and its catalogue of objects.
