Few destinations merit the ‘to see it, is to believe it’ affirmation quite more deservedly than Santorini. I’d go as far as saying that, to experience a stay at Canaves, is to truly know what it means to have found a home away from home, and the kind of good life Pinterest dreams are made of. Speaking of which, this is the kind of hotel that practically begs for memories to be stored in your mind, not your phone. Just off the cobbled white-washed alleys of Oia, Canaves raises the bar for what the ideal understated luxury hideaway should be. This is Santorini at its finest.
First impressions first. The staff will and consistently do bend backwards to ensure you are comfortably pampered. They do so in subtle and genuinely kind ways which really goes to show the warmth and bonhomie they exude - from the personable service around the spectacular infinity pool area, to what I can only describe as the most resolutely rejuvenating spa experience I’ve ever had. Every day started with a proper sunscreen slathering session, followed by scrumptious breakfast on the patio that included, but was by no means limited to, the freshest of the fresh from Santorini’s blessed soil.
Actually strike that. My every day started (and ended!) with a bathroom ritual in our haven of a room, inside a rain shower that was massive and airy and heavenly and all sorts of wonderful. Throughout our stay, we managed to fit in a wondrous wine-tasting experience, and an exceptional few lunches. Now, I do wish we had stayed for a private dinner by our balcony on our last night, when we instead felt compelled to take a long stroll out and sip the island vibe some more. You see the only downside to Canaves, is the strength of character it takes to get out of its comforting proximity and tour around Santorini. But I guess you can just fix that by staying as long as you can. Or coming back again. And again.
